I arrive!
Last Saturday I arrived M'tarem after I finished my language course in Baguio. Between Baguio and M'tarem I was one week for sharing and information’s in Alaminos. That's the place where the Bishop is living. So I also met him several times and I was invited to go to other parishes together with him. So I learn more and more about "my" new home here. Most of the people are very nice and open. They like to share information’s about other people. Sometimes it's also difficult to have conversation without being too indiscreet.
When I came into the house - indeed it's very big - it was totally empty, except some furniture. There was neither drinking water left nor gas for cooking. Also no food in the house. So first I put down all my stuff and went to the next sari-sari store. Sari-sari means: mix-mix. They have some food and some drinks just for surviving. Of course it is also surviving of the owners! But this time it was really my survival.
After the first night in the house, I went to mass at 6 o'clock. After my breakfast in town I went to Barangay (Barrio/quarter) together with some sisters. I had to visit some patient which I have not seen 4 a long time. And I also was speaking with people around. After some hours there we went home. The sisters invited me for supper. After a prayer I went home to sleep.
The next day I had already schedules with people from social action of the parish. We went to a far Barangay to visit some tuberculosis patients. The whole family is affected. But some of them had already some treatment. Therefore we have to find solutions together and to involve the right experts.
Sometimes it's quite hard for me to understand the Pilipino way and how it works. Who is the right person for something? But after a time I will understand and also I'm much more able to give some good advises or to ask the right questions.
I really have to say, that I appreciate that country very much. I like the food, which reminds me so often to the Camino of Santiago de Compostela in Spain - because of the seafood and the way how to cook. I like maybe much more the climate here then in Switzerland. I also enjoy the new language and my first steps to speak with the people. I love the live here. I really miss all my friend abroad (in Switzerland and all over the world).
Tomorrow I'll go to an other Barangay, which I visited already three times. But it's quite far away and I need 40 minutes to go there. I'm excited to visit the people and to speak with them.
Ende meines Sprachkurses in Tagalog
Mein Sprachkurs neigt sich dem Ende. Ich bin wirklich froh über die Bereicherung dieser Sprache. Tagalog ist nicht wie viele europäischen Sprachen. Darum war es manchmal auch anstrengend Wörter zu lernen, die ähnlich klingen. Nun gilt es konsequent anzuwenden und zu erweitern, was ich gelernt habe. Dass das nicht immer ganz einfach sein dürfte in einem Umfeld wo eben Tagalog nicht eigentliche Muttersprache ist, ist auch klar.
Ich betrachte diese Sprache mehr als eine "Erweiterung" im Sinne von "Hilfe zur noch besseren Verständigung speziell mit den Ärmsten". Nur, wenn ich die Menschen Kulturell und damit eben auch sprachlich verstehe, kann eine Zusammenarbeit wirklich so erfolgen, wie sie nützlich ist. Meine Ideen, die ich schon habe, müssen da immer im Hintergrund bleiben, denn sie sind eben auch europäisch. Ich freue mich sehr auf all die Menschen, die ich schon kennen lernen durfte und auf das Projekt mit den Menschen. Dass Gut Ding Weile haben will, will ich dabei ernst nehmen.
Ich bete täglich für alle meine Freunde und fühle mich dadurch sehr mit euch allen verbunden. Ich bin auch überzeugt, dass es nicht nur eine Vorstellung ist. Meine Erfahrung und Überzeugung zeigt mir, dass es eine wirkliche Verbindung ist.
Die Wahlen sind nun ja fast vorbei. Bis die letzten zwei Senatoren ausgezählt sind, kann es sich ja nur noch um Tage handeln. Für mich war es tatsächlich eine sehr interessante Zeit und sehr lehrreich zudem. Viele wissen, dass in den letzten zwei Monaten viel geschehen sind. Vor allem beschäftigen mich die vielen Morde im Zusammenhang mit den Wahlen. Aber auch die anderen Morde sind ein übles Zeichen. Ich bin aber guter Dinge, dass wir alle durch gemeinsames Arbeiten das Antlitz der Welt step by step verändern. Auch wenn es kleine Schritte sind, es sind doch unsere Schritte. In diesem Zusammenhang kann ich euch alle beruhigen. Denn meine Situation hier ist nicht extrem gefährdet. Es ist wichtig für alle Reisenden, stets vorsichtig und aufmerksam zu sein. Vorsicht ist vor allem dann geboten, wenn einmal eine Routine aufkommt. Dann wäre es möglich, sich sicherer zu fühlen, als man (auch als Ausländer) in Wirklichkeit ist.
In den vergangenen zwei Monaten durfte ich mit den Steyler Missionaren (SVD) zusammen wohnen. Die SVD-Missionaries haben mir wirklich einen spannenden, interessanten und "farbenprächtigen" Aufenthalt ermöglicht. Es könnte nicht mehr besser sein. Sie haben mich nicht nur in vieles Eingeführt und mit mir besprochen, sondern ich hatte auch die Gelegenheit viele Leute aus aller Welt kennen zu lernen. Interessant waren viele Ausflüge, die wir unternommen haben. Hilfreich war das Asia-Pacific-Treffen der SVD hier. Missionare aus ganz Asien trafen sich und besprachen ihre Anliegen. Das gab mir doch einen guten "Draht" zur weiten Welt.

Welcome to the Philippines. I'm encouraged to write my own blog here. Sometimes I'll write my "news" in English and sometimes in German. I also hope to be able to write in Tagalog later on!
So that's the first day and the first page. I hope you'll enjoy my updates which I'll write monthly. I do know, that it's not so often. But for me it's also time I need beside all the other duties.

Anyway, there are no words to describe all the beauty of this country!
